Will Kinderhook become a V I C T I M of urban sprawl?
It has already begun !
A huge $10 million shopping
mall is proposed on a 19.9 acre site (Larger than the
business area of Valatie) at the intersection of
Routes 9, 9H and State Farm Road,
including 484 parking spaces. If the Town Planning Board
permits it, we can expect:
-
A traffic increase nightmare throughout Valatie
and Kinderhook
-
-
The latest proposal by the DOT is
to remove the traffic lights and install a dangerous one lane
"roundabout." The experts expect traffic to stop for pedestrians in
crosswalks.
-
-
A safety factor
for pedestrians, the Ichabod Crane
School Campus, school busses and
students. (The School System located
directly across from the site.)
-
-
Environmental problems
including water pollution from parking lot run-off, leakage
from the mall’s septic system into the aquifer and possible depletion of
the aquifer. Industrial lighting, 35 – 40 feet high, in parking lot,
will obliterate the night sky.
-
A
negative impact on property
values which would place a greater tax burden on the residents
least able to pay more taxes.
-
-
A devastating negative impact on locally owned
businesses.
-
-
A devastating negative economic impact on the
Village of Valatie due to businesses closing or moving to the mall in
the Township.
-
- It is imperative that our town officials protect
us
-
from the highway blight of urban sprawl that has
beset so much of America. We must maintain our special
character.
Over 225 of your neighbors have joined together to
stop this immense proposal. We have engaged a legal team and have enlisted
the services of various scientists to fight false claims of the developer.
All of this requires money, volunteers, and labor.
